Friedrich Wagenfeld

Friedrich Wagenfeld ( born January 3, 1810 in Bremen, † August 26, 1846 ) was a German philologist and writer.

Biography

Wagenfeld was the second son of a mute goods dealer. Language Gifted he attended elementary school in Bremen. He studied from 1829 to 1832 Theology, philosophy and philology at the University of Göttingen, but he also visited Oriental and Greek lectures. After graduating, he worked from 1832 as a tutor in Brinkum near Bremen.

There, he claimed, he finds himself in possession of a found in a Portuguese monastery manuscript that contains the work of Phoenician historian Sanchuniathon in Philo's Greek translation. He published in 1836 an extract of the manuscript with a foreword by George Frideric Grotefends, a year later, the full manuscript was published. Meanwhile, however, doubts about the authenticity of the manuscript was loud. Wagenfeld admitted to have invented the manuscript itself with the help of a Bremen high school teacher, and that she " was only a mystification of the learned world apart ". He succeeded well even learned Orientalists as Karl Otfried Müller were fooled at first.

His linguistic talent that was evident in the creation of the fake left, hoping that he would turn to more serious work, however, he fell into a drunk life from which he was no longer tear. He published only a few major works: 1845 Bremen 's folk tales, a collection of traditions and legends, some of which may have been invented by him free. The History of the Seven Lazy goes back to him. 1845 also appeared the sketches from the life of the people of Bremen. 1846 appeared The war rides Bremer on land and water. He also wrote newspaper articles and edited the Bremer Unterhaltungsblatt the bookstore Emperor until his early death.
