Friedrich Wilhelm Rust

Friedrich Wilhelm Rust ( born July 6, 1739 Wörlitz / Dessau, † February 28, 1796 in Dessau ) was a German violinist and composer. He was the father of the pianist and organist Karl Wilhelm Rust and the grandfather of the choirmaster, composer and Bach scholar Wilhelm Rust.

Life

Even in his earliest youth Rust received a thorough musical education, which initially his father, a princely Kammerrat and bailiff, and after his death in 1751, Frederick's eldest brother Johann Ludwig Anton took over. Rust attended to 1758 Lutheran High School in Köthen and studied law in Halle ( Saale), where he was taught by Wilhelm Friedemann Bach in composition, organ and piano. From 1762, he took music lessons with Karl Höckh ( 1707-1773 ) in Zerbst and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Franz Benda in Berlin. In 1767 he accompanied the Prince Leopold Friedrich Franz of Anhalt- Dessau on a trip to Italy, where he completed his training at Giuseppe Tartini and Pugnani. From 1766 he worked again in Dessau, where he worked among other things as a teacher. Since 1775 he was the successor of Johann Friedrich Fasch court music director and conductor of the theater in Dessau. Goethe, who was 1776 in Wörlitz was impressed with him so that he wanted to set to music a lot of his works from him.

In his music education Rust came at an early age with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach in touch. He played by his own account from the Well- Tempered Clavier " the first 24 preludes and fugues from all shades of the old Sebastian Bach from beginning to end by heart. "

His large collection of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, which was composed of handwritten transcripts, copies of other contemporaries, as well as printing, involving over 90 individual works (including BWV 525-530, 802-805, 846-869 ), and exclusively instrumental works (mainly for keyboards). After Rust's death, the collection was initially owned by the family, went to the death of his grandson Wilhelm Rust on various " intermediate owner " above and is now partly in Johann Sebastian Bach Institute in Göttingen.

Work
