Fritz Göttisheim

Christian Friedrich Göttisheim ( born March 28, 1837 in Wild Mountain, Württemberg, † July 12, 1896 in Basel) was a Swiss politician. He was the first president of the Free Democratic Party.

Biography

Göttisheim lived since the age of six in Basel, 1856, he was naturalized in Basel. He studied in Tübingen and Basel natural sciences and became a teacher after graduation, later lecturer in health care. He was also editor of various liberal newspapers such as 1882-1896 at the Basler Nachrichten, succeeding Emil Frey.

As a leading representative of the Basel Liberals he was in 1864 elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and 1881 in the Senate; two parliaments, he belonged to until his death. He dealt mainly with social policy, he advocated a compulsory health and accident insurance.

1883-1886 he was president of the " Democratic Society ", which was founded in 1878 to bundle the Liberal forces in the canton. In 1883 he was involved in the founding of the "Association free Inniger Kleinbasler ", a Basel Quarter Association, which he chaired until 1888 as well.

Göttisheim was 1891/92 Senate President from 1894 to 1896, and first president of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland. He significantly contributed to the development and enforcement of statutes in Olten to launched all-Swiss party.

He was a member of the Evangelical Reformed Church Council 1874-1889 and the Synod of Canton. With Theodor Hoffmann- Merian Göttisheim founded the religious- liberal community association " Z S" in Klein Basel, he also presided.

His son Emil Göttisheim was Basel Grand Council and the National Council. He called one of the first women's suffrage in Switzerland.
