Fritz Mahler

Fritz Mahler ( * July 16, 1901 in Vienna, † June 18, 1973 in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, United States) was an Austrian and later American conductor. He was forced to emigrate to the United States in order to escape the persecution as a Jew by the Nazis.

Life

Fritz Mahler, was born as the son of Ludwig Mahler, professor of Oriental languages ​​, and his wife Agnes, born Schuschny. His musical talent stems from his relationship with her ​​may Gustav Mahler. His father was the cousin of the famous composer.

Mahler studied 1920-1924 musicology at the University of Vienna. He learned conducting with Leopold kingdom of wine, and composition with Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alban Berg. As Mahler in 1924 his degree, he was in many respects already occurred as a conductor, so in Bad Hall, at the Vienna Opera, the National Theatre Mannheim and at the Volksoper in Vienna.

Soon after, he headed the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1930 he went to Copenhagen to conduct the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. He remained there until 1935. This year Mahler followed an invitation of the Columbia Broadcasting Company and conducted a series of concerts in New York. Mahler was born into a Jewish family and emigrated to the U.S. in order to save themselves from persecution by the Nazis. In 1939 he became an American citizen. In the same year he married Pauline Koner, a renowned dancer and choreographer.

From 1939 to 1950 he was one of the Juilliard Summer School of Music in New York as Director for the opera. From 1947 to 1950 Mahler conducted the Erie Philharmonic in Erie ( Pennsylvania). Under his direction, the orchestra reached national prominence for the first time. From 1953 to 1964 Mahler conducted the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in Hartford, Connecticut. With this orchestra a series of recordings were performed. After his engagement was not renewed in Hartford, Mahler decided to accept various orders in Europe, Asia and South Africa.

Fritz Mahler died in June 1973 in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, of a heart attack.
