Galusha A. Grow

Galusha Aaron Grow ( August 31, 1823 in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut, † March 31, 1907 in Glenwood, Scranton, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party or the Republican Party since 1857, 1851-1863 and 1894-1903 Member of the U.S. House of Representatives and between July 1861 and March 1863 and speaker of the House.

Biography

In May 1834, the family of Grow settled in Pennsylvania in Glenwood in Susquehanna County. There he attended in addition to the general school (Common School), the Franklin Academy. After the completion of Amherst College, he studied law 1844-1847 and in 1847 admitted to the bar in Susquehanna County.

His political career began as the Democratic candidate in the election to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from March 4, 1851 to March 3, 1863. Between 1855 and 1857 he was chairman of the Committee on the Territories ( House Committee on Territories). In 1857 he switched from the Democrats to the Republicans and was its candidate for the office of Speaker of the Repräsentenhaus. However, it was defeated Democrat James Lawrence Orr. Later, he was from 1859 to 1861 again Chairman of the Committee on the Territories and was eventually chosen so after the beginning of the Civil War on July 4, 1861, and about four months after the usual start of the congress session on March 3, the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

After his retirement from the House of Representatives he was again working as a lawyer. After that, he was from 1871 to 1876 president of the Houston & Great Northern Railroad Co. of Texas, before he returned to Pennsylvania, where he ran a business for the sale of timber, petroleum and soft coal. He also continued to be politically engaged and was both in 1864 as well as 1884 and 1892 Delegate of the Republican National Convention to draw up the presidential candidate of his party.

After the death of William Lilly, a congressman from Pennsylvania, on December 1, 1893 Grow as his successor was again elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, is this after several re- elections of 26 February 1894 to 3 March 1903. During this time, he was from 1895 to 1903 and Chairman of the Education Committee ( House Committee on Education). In 1902, he declared the waiver of a bid again in the coming elections to the 58th U.S. Congress.

After his death, was buried in Harford (Pennsylvania) Galusha A. Grow on the Harford Cemetery.
