John Wesley Davis

John Wesley Davis ( * April 16, 1799 in New Holland, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, † August 22 1859 in Carlisle, Indiana ) was an American politician. He was from 1845 to 1847 the 22 speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and also in the years 1853 and 1854, the Governor of the Oregon Territory.

Life

Davis ' family moved shortly after his birth according to Shippensburg in Cumberland County, where he went to a private school. He then studied medicine, which he at the Baltimore Medical College, graduating in 1821. Two years later he moved to Carlisle in Indiana to work as a doctor.

Policy

House of Representatives

Davis 1829 restructuring judge in Sullivan County, a position he held until 1831. He then moved to 1833 in the House of Representatives of Indiana, which he headed in 1831 as speaker. On 4 March 1835, he was deputy of the Jacksonians in the 24th Congress. In 1836 he turned from disease-related reasons for re-election, so in 1837 he left the Congress again. He was, however, this time as a candidate of the Democrats re-elected again in the election in 1838 and moved in 1839 to the 26th Congress. His re-election two years later failed again; this time it was up to the voters, so he got himself elected again in 1841 to the House of Representatives from Indiana. He was there in the same year again spokesperson, the state legislature in 1843 but left again to feed again in the House of Representatives of the United States. In the 28th Congress he was chairman of the Committee on Public Lands, 29th Congress of March 4, 1845 to March 3, 1847, the Speaker of the House. In the 1846 election he was not re-elected, but was appointed in 1848 by President James K. Polk to the Messenger in the Empire of China, which he remained until 1851. From 1851 to 1852, and then again in 1857 he was again in the House of Representatives Indiana.

Governor of Oregon

When Joseph Lane resigned from the post of governor in the Oregon Territory in May, 1853, followed him then George Law Curry. After about six months he was replaced by John Wesley Davis, who was to take over this position at the request of then President Franklin Pierce. Davis had led the campaign team that Pierce gave the presidency, which is why this particular gratitude to him for the penultimate Governor of Oregon, up from the field on Valentine's Day 1859, the states of Oregon, Idaho and Washington were formed. Davis came on 1 August 1854 as governor back; the population had never been to him at this time well-disposed, as they would rather have seen one of their own, coming from Oregon politicians at the top of the territory.
