Jay Bowerman

Jay Bowerman ( born August 15, 1876 in Hesper, Winneshiek County, Iowa, † October 25, 1957 in Portland, Oregon ) was an American politician and from 1910 to 1911 the 13th Governor of the State of Oregon.

Early years

Jay Bowerman attended the local schools of his home. In 1893 he came with his family to Salem, Oregon. There he studied until 1896 at the Willamette University law. During the Spanish- American War he was a soldier for a short time. He then worked as a lawyer in Oregon.

Political career

Bowerman was a member of the Republican Party. In 1904 he was elected to the Senate from Oregon, four years later, he managed the re- election to the Board. Since 1909 he was president of the chamber of parliament. In this capacity, he fell to the Office of the Governor in June 1910. The re-elected in 1906, Governor George Earle Chamberlain had resigned in February 1909 to change to the Congress. His successor was constitutionally Secretary Frank W. Benson. As Benson gave up the post in June 1910 for health reasons, had the President of the Senate, so Jay Bowerman, finish the unexpired term as governor.

Originally Benson had planned a return to his recovery; but since this did not occur, Bowerman had to officiate as governor until January 8, 1911. In these six months, he can not place a greater emphasis. He said the banks of the state high-risk speculation with shares. 1910 Bowerman applied for a regular term as governor. But he was defeated in the elections the Democrats Oswald West. It also apparently a scandal has played a role because of an affair with his secretary.

After the end of his term he was until 1911 a member of the State Senate. Then he moved to Portland, where he worked as a lawyer. He was then in the legislature an active lobbyist for several companies and was involved personally with the purchase of government bonds for the expansion of the road network. Bowerman died in 1957. He was married twice and had five children. His 1911 born son Bill became a successful track coach and was co-founder of Nike.
