Gáspár Heltai

Caspar Helth, Hungarian Heltai Gáspár, (* 1520 in Heltau; ? † 1574 in Cluj ) was a Protestant theologian, writer, publisher and reformer.

Life

Caspar Helth probably originated in the Transylvanian Saxon city Heltau in Transylvania. On February 17, 1543, he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg, went in 1544 as pastor to Cluj, where he remained until 1557. During this time he worked as a Lutheran reformer, but was followed in 1559 Franz Davidis on the path of Calvinism.

His living he earned as a printer. He looked at the Hungarian translation of the Bible with, issued in 1550 Martin Luther small catechism and catechetical and devotional writings published itself. These appear mainly in Hungarian, but also partly in German.

As a publisher, he drove primarily works of theological content and has significantly contributed to the development of the Hungarian literary prose. In his work, a cynical critique of society reveals where he confidently denounces the increasing power of the bourgeoisie.
