Gebze

Gebze ( ancient name: Libyssa; ancient Greek: Λίβυσσα; old name Gekbuze, Ghviza, Gavize, Gebize, in German notation Dschebse ( Gebze ), Dschebize ( Gebize ) ) is a Turkish industrial city on the Sea of ​​Marmara in the province of Kocaeli.

Gebze is now on the Asian outskirts of Istanbul. In the vicinity of the city there are numerous industrial plants that have been especially since the 1990s, constantly expanding.

In the near Gebze are the Istanbul excursion places Tuzla and Darıca. In Darıca one finds the only zoo in Istanbul.

In the year 183 BC, Hannibal committed suicide in Gebze, to escape capture by the Romans. In the nearby town Hünkar Cayre died in 1481 Sultan Mehmet II Fatih, the conqueror of Constantinople.
