General Conference on Weights and Measures

The International General Conference on Weights and Measures (from the French " Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures "; short CGPM ), the Conference of Plenipotentiaries of the Member States of the Metre Convention. She's decision-making body of the Metre Convention and meets regularly at the headquarters of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures ( BIPM) in Sèvres Paris suburb. It will be used resolutions on fundamental questions concerning the Metre Convention and the metric system of units or adopted since 1960, the International System of Units (SI). Meeting reports and resolutions are published by the International Bureau. In addition, the General Conference shall elect the 18 members of the International Committee for Weights and Measures. The Convention provides for a convening of at least once every six years, it is convened by the International Committee, chaired by the President of the French Academy of Sciences. Germany, Austria and Switzerland belong to the General Conference as initial signatories to the Convention since the first meeting of 1889.

Since 1960 the conference takes place every four years. As of February 2013, 55 states (full) members of the Metre Convention, a further 37 associated countries are not members of the General Conference.

  • Resolution 12: Recording of Katals (symbol: kat ) as a coherent SI derived unit with a particular name. Katal a represents a mole per second ( mol / s ) as a unit of a catalytic activity, particularly the enzymatic activity in biocatalysis.
