Gennadiy Shatkov

Gennady Ivanovich Schatkow (Russian Геннадий Иванович Шатков; born May 27, 1932 in Leningrad, † January 14, 2009 ) was a Soviet boxer. Schatkow was, among others, Olympic champion in 1956 and European champion in 1955 and 1959 respectively amateur middleweight.

Career

Gennadi Schatkow began at the age of twelve years in a Leningrad Pioneer Club with the boxes. His first coaches were there A. Zhdanov and Ivan Osipov. In 1949, he first drew attention to himself when he finished at the Soviet Junior Championship in Rostov-on- Don in his weight class third place.

In 1951, he graduated in Leningrad from high school and entered the University of Leningrad to study law. As a student, he started for now " Burewestnik " Leningrad. In the same year he also celebrated his first major success with the seniors. It was in the light middleweight champion of Leningrad. In 1953 he finished in the championship of the Soviet Union in the light middleweight third place and 1954 he was at the same event middleweight already second. In 1955 it then at the Soviet Championship scored the first title. He defeated in the final of the middle weight Boris Nazarenko on points.

Gennadi Schatkow was then used in the in May 1955 in Berlin ( West) held the European Championship. The Soviet national coach Sergei Tscherbakow had his boxer well prepared, so that they all competed in Berlin at his best. Gennadi Schatkow was an excellent boxer and counter equipped with a very good physique. In Berlin he defeated in the second round Hope from England in the quarterfinals Zbigniew Piorkowski from Poland superior on points. In the semifinals he met defending champion Dieter Wemhöner who wanted in his home town of course defend his title from 1953. In a battle balanced Gennadi Schatkow was awarded a tight point victory and was thus in the final battle. In this he met the European champion from 1951 Stig Sjölin from Sweden. Although Sjölin Schatkow brought towards the end of the fight a few times at a loss ranged from whose point lead from the first two rounds to get awarded the victory. Gennadi Schatkow was so European champion in 1955 in the middleweight division.

1956 Gennadi Schatkow qualified by a victory at the 1st Spartakiade the Soviet Union for the Olympic Games in Melbourne. He was in Melbourne back in good form and defeated in the second round Ralph Hosack from Canada on points, was the quarter-final winner over Giulio Rinaldi from Italy and defeated in the semifinals Víctor Zalazar from Argentina by way of knockout in the second round. In the final he met the surprisingly up in this final round of Chileans Ramon Tapia, he was far superior and he still beat in the first round KO. He was thus Olympic champion. In this Olympic tournament Schatkow was perhaps the best fights of his international career.

1957 saw Gennadi Schatkow at the Soviet Championship a surprise. He was not in good shape and was defeated by Askold Lasota from Moscow in the final of the middle weight on points. But he was still employed at the European Championships in Prague, but was also there in a little better shape. Although he succeeded in the second round one point victory over the Bulgarians Topusow, but he was defeated in the quarterfinals against the Yugoslavs Dragoslav Jakovljević against which he twice on the ground and was eliminated without medal.

In 1958 was Gennadi Schatkow again Soviet middleweight champion Yevgeny before Feofanow. International Championships did not take place in that year. In 1959 he was at the Soviet Championship not at the start. The middleweight title won there Valeri Popentschenko, which should be his successor as the best Soviet middleweights soon. At the European Championships in 1959 in Lucerne but was reinstated Gennadi Schatkow. He justified this confidence Tscherbakows well and won with one point victory in the final over to Poland Tadeusz Walasek his second European title.

In the Soviet Cup in 1960 Gennadi Schatkow separated already in the quarter- finals when he lost against Valeri Popentschenko. Soviet champion at middleweight but was not Popentschenko, but Yevgeny Feofanow who defeated Popentschenko in the semifinals and against Danas Pozniakas in the final. In the light heavyweight division was Askold Lasota Soviet masters. Since the Soviet head coach Tscherbakow of Lasota at the Olympic Games is not much awaited in Rome, he persuaded Gennadi Schatkow to compete in Rome in the light heavyweight division. Schatkow therefore launched in Rome in the light heavyweight and defeated in the first round of the tournament the Luxembourg Raymond Cillien sure on points. In the quarterfinals, he encountered a young, 18-year- old colored U.S. boxer named Cassius Clay, of which one does not know much in the Soviet team. Cassius Clay was Gennadi Schatkow superior because of its quickness and surprisingly also by his self-confidence and scored Schatkow of 5-0 judges' votes. After these Olympics Gennadi Schatkow ended his boxer 's career. He completed his law studies in 1962 and became in 1964 pro- rector of the University of Leningrad. He also received the Order of Lenin, the highest award that awarded the Soviet Union. He remained the boxes but still connected and has published seven books, mostly about sports topics. The most popular in the Soviet Union were doing "The Great Ring" (1963 ), "Hard Round " (1979) and "The Young Boxer " (1982). Schatkow died after a long illness on January 14, 2009 in Saint Petersburg.
