Geoffrey Lane, Baron Lane

Geoffrey Dawson Lane, Baron Lane AFC PC QC ( born July 17, 1918 in Derby, † 22 August 2005) was a British lawyer.

Life

He attended Trinity College, Cambridge, where he made his degree in 1939. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Air Force, where he flew a Wellington bomber, was promoted to Major and commanded a squadron. He was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1943.

In 1946 he was admitted to the bar in Gray 's Inn. He specialized in criminal cases in the districts Midland and Oxford. In 1962 he became Attorney-General. He accused some of the perpetrators of the great Postzugraubes.

In 1966 he became a judge of the Queen's Bench Division and received the obligatory knighthood.

Lane 1974 Judge at the Court of Appeal of England and Wales and in October 1979 Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. This marked his elevation to Life peer as Baron accompanied Lane, of St Ippollitts in the County of Hertfordshire.

From 1980 to 1992 he was Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales.
