Gordon Hewart, 1st Viscount Hewart

Hewart Gordon, 1st Viscount Hewart, PC ( born January 7, 1870 in Bury, † May 5, 1943 in Totteridge ) was a British politician and lawyer.

Life

Hewart attended Manchester Grammar School and studied at University College, Oxford. Since 1913 he was a member of the House of Commons for the Liberal Party in 1918 and Privy Counsellor. From January 1919 to March 1922 he was Attorney General. He became in 1922 Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and remained so to 12 October 1940. Hewart received in 1922 as Baron Hewart the peerage to sit as Lord Chief Justice in the House of Lords can. In retirement he was elevated to Viscount Hewart.

Lord Hewart married twice, 1892 Sarah Wood Riley, and in 1934 Jean Stewart. With his first wife he had a daughter Katharine and his son and heir Hugh title. He died on 5 May 1943 in Totteridge near London.
