Geoje

Geoje is a city in the south of the province of Gyeongsangnam -do in South Korea. It is located about 54 km southwest of the port city of Busan. The town consists of a number of islands, the largest is Geoje Island. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (former Daewoo Shipyard ) in Okpo and Samsung Heavy Industries ( SHI) in Gohyeon both located on the island Geojedo. The city also has a lot of tourist destinations to offer.

History

In the Silla Dynasty, the name Geoje -gun in 757 during the reign of King Gyeongdeok was ( 경덕왕 ,景德 王, 742-765 ) used for the first time. From the years 983-1423 different names ( Giseong - hyeon and Jechang -gun ) was used during the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Joseon Dynasty, the name in 1423 to Geoje - hyeon, 1489 to Geoje -bu and 1895 moved back to Geoje -gun. On 18 March 1914, the districts Yongnam -gun, Jinnam -gun and Geoje -gun was united to the district Tongyeong -gun by the General Chosen.

After the founding of South Korea Geoje -gun the district was proclaimed on Oct 14, 1951. The district administration was verläufigen seat from the January 1, 1953 in Jangseungpo and moved on October 1, 1956 to enable Gohyeon. On Jan 1, 1989, the district Jangseungpo - eup Geoje -gun was isolated and named the city. Already on Jan 1, 1995, the city and the district Jangseungpo Geoje -gun to the city of Geoje ( Geoje -si ) was combined.

Geography

The city of Geoje covers an area of 402 km ², the main island has an area 383 km ². The rest of the area is occupied by 60 smaller islands, with 10 of them are inhabited. The main island is connected by two bridges to the mainland in Tongyeong. Since December 13, 2010 combines the Busan - Geoje Fixed Link across two about 2 km long cable-stayed bridges and a 4 km long underwater tunnel, the two cities, so the distance traveled by bus was reduced to about 60 km.
