Georg Ferdinand Howaldt

Georg Ferdinand Howaldt ( born April 8, 1802 in Braunschweig, † January 19, 1883 ) was a German goldsmith, sculptor and ore caster.

Life

Georg Howaldt was born in Brunswick, the son of originating from Wroclaw Brunswick Goldsmith David Ferdinand Howaldt. After the orphanage - school visit, he first learned from his father from 1816 to 1821, the goldsmith and then formed six years on the move (including the silversmiths Häberlein in Nuremberg) away. Even in Braunschweig he had practiced in addition to teaching in the modeling and not least because of the experiences of Nuremberg friendship with Jacob Daniel Burgschmiet he turned his work in sculpture and art casting to. In 1828, he was the successor Burgschmiets teacher of modeling at the Polytechnic School in Nuremberg, in 1836 teacher of modeling and in 1863 professor at the Collegium Carolinum of Brunswick, now the Technical University. Among his pupils was also Adolf Breymann. 1874 Georg Howaldt was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Henry the Lion.

Georg Howaldt married on 20 March 1832 in Nuremberg Barbara Hechinger and had with her five children, including the third child of vorverstorbene sculptor August. He died on January 19, 1883 in Braunschweig. His grave in the Magnifriedhof in the immediate vicinity of Lessing tomb is preserved. Christian Daniel Rauch thought he was the best ore caster of his time. This is not least because of his knowledge and skills in the creation of large monuments in repoussé work, an artisan method that was described for the first time in the modern era of Benvenuto Cellini again.

Work

In view of the reconstruction of the Brunswick City Palace, the city remembers its increasingly important brass founder. In the Brunswick Museum recently a finger of Brunonia was rediscovered in which even a handwritten note Georg Howaldts was, from which emerged about which finger it is. His work goes far beyond Braunschweig addition: one of the first monuments, which was erected on September 14, 1869 Central Park of New York, Alexander von Humboldt honors. It was made by Georg Howaldt & Son in Braunschweig on a design by Gustav winds.
