Georg Friedrich von Martens

Georg Friedrich von Martens ( born February 22, 1756 in Hamburg, † February 21, 1821 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German naturalist and expert on international law, diplomat and publicist.

Life

Martens studied law in Göttingen and was trained in Wetzlar, Regensburg and Vienna on. From his student days in Göttingen, a silhouette in the Schubert silhouettes collection is preserved. He was confirmed by Piter Poel in his memoirs, the Hamburg Country team in Göttingen. 1780 and his doctorate in 1782 he completed his habilitation in Göttingen. In 1783 he was appointed extraordinary, and in 1784 full professor of natural and international law in Göttingen.

Martens was raised to the peerage in 1789.

From 1808 to 1813, he held the post of the State Council of the Kingdom of Westphalia in Kassel and in 1810 the president of the financial section.

In 1814 he was the King of Hanover to the Secret Cabinet Council, and in 1816 was appointed parliamentary messenger.

Works

Martens first developed out a system of positive international law from an empirical research method.
