Georg Simon Klügel

Georg Simon Klügel ( born August 19, 1739 Hamburg, † August 4, 1812 in Halle) was a German mathematician and physicist.

Klügel studied in Göttingen since 1760 theology, and later under Kästner mathematics, and a doctorate in 1763 with a thesis Conatuum praecipuorum theoriam parallelarum demonstrandi recensio (Eng. screening the predominant attempts to prove the theory of parallels ), in which he examined about thirty proof attempts of the parallel postulate.

Klügel then edited in Hanover for two years the Hanoverian magazine and in 1766 professor of mathematics at the University of Helmstedt. In 1788 he was appointed as the successor of Wenceslaus Johann Gustav Karsten to Halle.

During his studies in Göttingen was Klügel classmate of Lichtenberg, with whom he was still later in correspondence. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge to three swords in Halle.
