George Franklin Fort

George Franklin Fort ( * 1809 in Pemberton, Burlington County, New Jersey, † April 22, 1872 in New Egypt, New Jersey ) was an American politician and 1851-1854 Governor of the State of New Jersey.

Early years and political rise

Fort George, whose exact date of birth is unknown, studied until 1828 at the University of Pennsylvania Medical. After that he began in the New Egypt to practice as a doctor. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1844 he was a member of a meeting to revise the State Constitution of New Jersey, from 1846 to 1850 he was a member of the State Senate. In 1850 he was elected governor of his state.

Governor of New Jersey

Fort George took up his new post on January 21, 1851. In his three-year tenure, the budget for education was increased. To improve the infrastructure, the roads were expanded or created new roads.
