George Montagu, 8th Duke of Manchester

George Victor Drogo Montagu, 8th Duke of Manchester ( born June 17, 1853 in London, † August 18, 1892 at Tandragee Castle in County Armagh ) was a British aristocrat and politician.

Life

George Montagu was the eldest son of five children of the politician William Montagu, 7th Duke of Manchester ( 1823-1890 ) and his wife Luise Friederike Auguste Gräfin von Alten ( 1832-1879 ), a daughter of Count Franz Karl Viktor of the elderly and the Hermine de Schminke.

On May 22, 1876, he married at Grace Church in New York City, the Cuban- American heiress Doña María Consuelo Yznaga del Valle ( 1859-1909 ), a daughter of the diplomat Don Antonia Yznaga del Valle and Ellen Clements. The marriage, which by all accounts was happy three children, William Angus Drogo (1877-1947) and the twin daughters Jacqueline Mary Alva went († 1895) and Alice Eleanor Louise († 1900), produced.

Between 1877 and 1880 he was a delegate in the House of Commons for the county of Huntingdonshire. Apart from his political career, he also reached the rank of Captain in the Royal Irish Fusiliers. After the death of his father in 1890 he inherited the title and a seat in the House of Lords.
