Georgios Sinas

Georg Simon Baron Sina, (Greek Γεώργιος Σίνας, born November 20, 1783 in Niš, † May 18, 1856 in Vienna ) was a Greek -Austrian entrepreneur Aromanian descent.

Life

He came from a well-known cotton merchant's family, came with his father Simon Georg Sina the Elder (1753-1822) in Vienna. The capital of the family he invested mainly in transport projects such as the establishment of river shipping companies and railways, or bridges over the Danube and the Neusiedler paper mills (now Mondi Group). His strongest opponent was the Rothschild family.

During the Napoleonic Wars he gave generous credit to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and also acquired large estates in Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia and Lower Austria ( Wall Bach, Rappoltenkirchen, Gföhl, Leopold Village, Poděbrady, Brumov ).

Sina gave the treasury of the newly founded state of Greece and was royally Greek consul-general in Austria. In the castle park of Rappoltenkirchen (now community Sieghartskirchen ) he built by Theophil Hansen a mausoleum for the freedom fighters Alexander Ypsilanti, he gave the castle to his family.

His first son, Simon Baron Sina turned to science and philosophy and financed the creation of the Sinai 's Academy of Athens. His second son, Johann Simon Baron Sina (* January 16, 1804, † May 4, 1869 ) was a banker and owner of a sugar factory. Due to the financial commitment of the brothers and the father a monopoly of the Rothschild family could be prevented in the railway construction of the monarchy. After a Majesty request of 17 February 1836, the Sina received on March 5, the authorization for the construction of two routes.

Trivia

Georg Simon von Sina got active in Athens architect Theophil von Hansen for his projects to Vienna, which became world famous and also the Austrian Parliament designed.

On Sina's suggestion arose in Greek quarter in his own house at the meat market No. 20/ 22, the Greek coffee house, it existed previously since 1827 in the building until the white ox. The gastronomic operation exists today as café-restaurant Vienne. Sina's portrait hangs above the Ausschanks continue.

1877 Sina street was named after him in Kaisermuehlen.
