Gerald Bartley

Gerald Bartley (Irish Gearóid Mac Pharthaláin, * June 12, 1898, † May 10, 1974 ) was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician.

Biography

After schooling Bartley worked as an insurance broker and also holds a degree in law. He then worked as a lawyer ( barrister ).

His political career began in 1932 as the candidate of the Bartley Fianna Fáil with the first elected as a member of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). In this he represented ten elections until 1937, first the constituency of Galway and then until 1965 the constituency of Galway West.

From June 1951 to June 1954 he was Parliamentary Secretary at the Agriculture Minister during the tenure of Prime Minister ( Taoiseach ) Éamon de Valera. After the Fianna Fáil the general election in 1957 won again, he was appointed in March 1957 by Prime Minister de Valera first to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and Trade and then from February 1958 to July 1959 to the parliamentary secretary to the Minister of Finance.

Following the appointment of Prime Minister Seán Lemass, he was appointed by that on 23 July 1959 as Minister of the Irish-speaking areas ( Gaeltacht ) for the first time in the Cabinet. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was then on 11 October 1961 to April 21, 1965 Defense Minister in the Cabinet Lemass. During this time, the later Minister and President of Dáil Éireann Joseph Brennan was its associated Parliamentary Secretary.

In the general election of 1965 Bartley opted not to run again.
