Gerard I, Count of Guelders

Gerhard III. of Wassenberg (Gerhard I. of funds, the Flaminius ) (* 1060, † before March 8, 1129 ) was the first Earl of money from the family of Flamenses.

His father was probably the Count Henry III. Wassenberg, according to another view Dietrich I. Flamens. Gerhard was mentioned in 1085 as Count of Wassenberg, 1096 for the first time as " Count of funds'. The title " Landgrave " also appear 1096. Considered as the progenitor of the counts of money from the home Wassenberg ( which Flamenses ) who went out in 1371 in the male line.

Gerhard named alternately after Wassenberg (Gerhard III. Wassenberg ) and by funds (Gerhard I von Geldern ) until 1118 funds prevailed in the naming. As the owner of the Imperial Bailiwick, as a church and as Vogt allodialer landowner Gerhard has been led to shift the focus of its sphere of influence and to call himself Count von Geldern ( 1096 ). As a result of this shift in focus, the only detectable castle 1237 funds has been probably built during this time. Gerhard I von Geldern was next to the Duke of Brabant and the Count of Luxembourg - Namur largest secular ruler, however in Lower Lorraine. He remained as the only strictly imperial ruler of this region.

The time of death is unknown I. Gerhards (after 1129 ), and it is unclear as to when it was an empowered successor available. According to Euler and racing it is 1117/1118 passed away. From Raumer place in 1129 only to Count Gerhard von Geldern, Regesta Imperii ( December 25, 1128 ) also knows only the counts of money, so that an earlier death of Gerhard I. presupposing of funds.

Marriages and children

After 1086 he married Clementia of Poitou gt of Gleiberg (* 1046/59, † after 1129 ), daughter of Count Wilhelm aigret of Poitou ( 1023-1058 ), Duke of Aquitaine, and the Ermesinde of Longwy ( † after 1058 ), widow of Count Konrad von Luxembourg (* 1086 ). The fact that Gerhard had been married twice, going to the long discussion back to whether there had been both a clemency of Gleiberg as well as a clemency of Poitou. However, since these are now saved as a single person, there is no reason to believe that Gerhard had married twice of funds. His children were:

  • Yolanda (* 1090 ); married 1 ) circa 1107 Count Baldwin III. (Hainaut); and 2 ) about 1122 Gottfried de Bouchain, Viscount of Valenciennes (see Ostervant, Gottfried II ). Since Yolanda (* 1090 ) and the marriage with Clementia of Poitou already to 1086, is also Jolantes daughter out of this, probably the only marriage Gerhards of Geldern.
  • Jutta / Judith (* 1090, † June 24, 1151 ), heiress of Wassenberg; ∞ 1110 Walram III. ( Limburg)
  • Gerhard II ( money ), the Lange.
