Gerhard VII, Duke of Jülich-Berg

Gerhard von Julich-Berg (c. 1416/17, † 1475 at Castle Lülsdorf ) was since 1428 Earl of Mount Ravens and since 1437 Duke of Jülich and Berg.

Life

Gerhard was the son of Count William of Ravens mountain and Adelheid of Tecklenburg. Succeeded his father in the county Ravens mountain, he took up after his death in 1428. As the heir of his uncle Duke Adolf von Jülich -Berg, he took over in 1437, the rule in the duchies of Jülich and Berg.

In the battle of Linnich on November 3, 1444 defeated Gerhard Arnold of Egmond, Duke of funds. He renounced the heirship and sold it to the Duke of Burgundy, thus the long-lasting Second Money Generic succession war came to an end. Out of gratitude, he founded the Order of Saint Hubert, also called the Order of the horn or Order of St. Hubert.

Shortly after the birth of his son William in 1455 Gerhard fell into a mental derangement. His wife Sophie of Saxe- Lauenburg took over the regency.

Gerhard died in 1475 and was buried in Altenberg Cathedral.
