Germanium (IV ) fluoride is a chemical compound selected from the group consisting of germanium compounds, and fluorides.
Production and representation
Germanium (IV ) fluoride can be prepared by reaction of germanium by fluorine or hydrogen fluoride.
It is also formed by the thermal decomposition of the complex salt Ba [ GeF6 ] that can be recovered by precipitation of a solution of germanium dioxide in hydrofluoric acid with barium.
Properties
Germanium (IV ) fluoride is a non-flammable, air strongly smoking gas with garlic-like odor. It forms with water to form corrosive acids ( hydrolysis to GeO2 and H2GeF6 ) and can react violently with them. Above 1000 ° C it decomposes, with hydrogen fluoride, fluorine and germanium arise. From aqueous solutions it crystallizes as a trihydrate.
Use
Germanium (IV ) fluoride is used in combination with disilane for the preparation of SiGe crystals.
