Gerolamo Marquese d'Andrea

Girolamo d' Andrea ( born April 12, 1812 in Naples, † May 14, 1868 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal.

Girolamo was educated in the " Collège La Fleche " in France, then entered the clerical state, receiving in 1835 the priest. Already in 1841 was consecrated bishop and appointed Titular Archbishop of Mytilene in partibus infidelium. The Pope sent him from 1841-1845 as apostolic nuncio to Switzerland. Was recalled to Rome in 1845 d' Andrea Secretary of the Congregation Council. On March 15, 1852 Pope Pius IX created him. Cardinal and appointed him transferred the title Church Saint Agnes Outside the Walls and the Abbey of Subiaco, after which he was in 1853 appointed Prefect of the Congregation of the Index. This office he held with rare moderation. Collected in 1860 for Cardinal Bishop of Sabina, and soon he was back in 1861 from the Office of the Prefect Congregation of the Index.

As 1859, the establishment of national unity of Italy came into question, d' Andrea joined the patriotic party. He advised Pope Pius IX. acceptance of him by Napoleon III. Presidency offered the Italian Confederation and the introduction of liberal reforms in the Papal States. He also declared against the condemnation of the Gallican writings and the suppression of the Catholic science. This he retired to the displeasure of the Pope and the wrath Giacomo Antonelli.

When D' Andrea 1864 left Rome and proceeded to Naples, he was, in vain asked to return in 1866 suspended from the administration of his diocese and its abbey, deprived him of the cardinal income and in September 1867 pronounced the dismissal of him. He then went to Rome, submitted himself to the Pope, was rehabilitated and on 17 January 1868. Cardinal Girolamo d' Andrea died to have regained, four weeks after his 56th birthday in Rome without its previous offices.
