Geography

Geroldsgrün lies in the west of the district court on the border to neighboring county Kronach in the Franconian Forest, a wooded mountain range. The watershed between the Rhine and the Elbe runs on the eastern hill. The Ölsnitz flows through the Ölsnitztal with striking rock formations towards Unterrodach.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1323 as Gerhart green documentary. The Pochhammer points to the old local industry of metal ore mining. The Red Eagle was a major symbol of the Margrave of Bayreuth, to whose territory the place mentioned in documents in 1330 formerly belonged. The green field color of the lower half of the shield indicates the place name.
