Gerrit Schulte

Gerardus Bernardus Maria Schulte ( called Gerrit Schulte, born January 7, 1916 in Amsterdam, † February 26, 1992 in 's- Hertogenbosch ) was a professional cyclist from the Netherlands.

He participated among others in the United Germany trip in 1939 and is revered to this day as a great cyclist in the Netherlands. He celebrated his biggest success in 1948 when he became world champion in the individual pursuit on the track was in Amsterdam and it showed in the final of the favored Fausto Coppi. He was also nine times Dutch champion in the individual pursuit and three times on the road.

1938 Schulte began in the Tour de France, won the first stage, but then gave up and decided never to start again at the Tour. From France but he got his nickname " Le Fou Pedalant " (Fr. = the crazy cyclists). He competed in a total of 73 six-day races, of which he won 19, many of them together with Gerrit Boeyen and Gerard " Gerrit " Peters.

Since 1955, the best Dutch professional racing cyclist of the year is awarded the Gerrit Schulte Trophy. Up to Schultes death this trophy was handed over to the restaurant in Den Bosch.
