Giacomo del Po

Giacomo del Pò ( born December 29, 1654 Rome, † November 16, 1726 in Naples) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque.

Life

According to Thieme -Becker Giacomo del Pò was born in Rome, according to De Dominici in Naples. It is certain that he was a pupil of his father, the painter and engraver Pietro del Pò. Then he went into the workshop of Nicolas Poussin in Rome. Even the age of twenty he was there on June 17, 1674 a member of the Accademia di San Luca.

From 1683 he has been proven in Naples, where he worked with the painter Francesco di Maria ( 1623-1690 ) frescoes in noble palaces. In addition, he was also active as a stage designer for the Teatro di San Bartolomeo.

Initially, the style of Poussin obliged, he moved to Naples in the direction of the Neapolitan Baroque, which was founded by Luca Giordano and continued by his pupil Francesco Solimena.

In 1720, two years after he had taken up residence in Vienna, commissioned Prince Eugene of Savoy del Pò with three large ceiling paintings for the upper Belvedere.

His sister Teresa del Pò worked as a miniaturist, the stepbrother Andrea del Pò should have been a painter. His pupils were Martoriello Gaetano, Antonio Massaro and Luigi Lanzi
