Giacomo Violardo

Giacomo Violardo ( born May 10, 1898 in Govone, Cuneo, Piedmont, † January 29, 1978 in Rome, Rome, Lazio ) was an Italian Curia Archbishop and Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

He studied at the seminary in Alba, but had to interrupt his studies to fight in the Italian army during the First World War. After the war he finished his studies at the seminary and studied at the Faculty of Theology of Turin, where he received a licentiate in theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum San Apollinare and in Rome, which he left both rights with the title Doctor. He was ordained priest on 29 June 1923. He then continued his studies at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, where he earned a doctorate in jurisprudence.

From 1928 to 1935 he was professor of moral theology and canon law at the Pontifical Regional Seminar Pius XI. Fano. Pius XI. appointed him on 14 December 1935 Chaplain of His Holiness on 23 April 1939 Honorary Prelate of His Holiness. Then he taught canon law (Book III) at the Pontifical Lateran University until 1964 and also served as Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law. After working as an auditor of the French Nunciature February to July 1938, he joined the Apostolic Signatura in as a promoter of justice. On 24 July 1954 he was Under Secretary of the same. John XXIII. appointed him on April 2, 1962 Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts. On January 26, 1965, Secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Discipline of the Sacraments. As secretary he was the second highest official of this Congregation by Benedetto Masella.

On February 19, 1966, he was appointed Titular Archbishop per hac vice of Satafi. The pope personally gave him on 19 March of the same year in St. Peter's episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Francesco Carpino, Assessor of Consistorial, and Ettore Cunial, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome. Paul VI. took him on 28 April 1969 as a cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Sant'Eustachio to the College of Cardinals. On the day of the consistory after four years of service, resigned from his position as secretary back. The canon law expert is buried in the parish church of his native town Govone.
