Giant Sand

Giant Sand is an American alternative country band from Tucson, Arizona.

Band History

The band was formed as Giant Sand Worms in the early 1980s by Howe Gelb and has long been based in Los Angeles. The members of the band changed over the years, including were John Convertino (drums) and Joey Burns ( bass), who later founded Calexico, longtime band members. Next played Chris Cacavas (of Green on Red ), Paula Jean Brown ( Go-Go's ) and Tom Larkins (later Jonathan Richman ) in the band. Guest artists have included Victoria Williams, Neko Case, Juliana Hatfield, PJ Harvey, John Parish, Vic Chesnutt, Steve Wynn, Vicki Peterson, Rainer Ptacek and almost all members of the band Poi Dog Pondering. The daughter of Yellow and Brown, Indiosa Patsy Jean is heard regularly on plates.

Yellow periodically published solo albums. Other side projects include The Band of Blacky Ranchette, OP8 (in collaboration with Lisa Germano ). On the albums of the Band of Blacky Ranchette are as guests, among others Lucinda Williams, Kurt Wagner ( Lambchop ) and Cat Power to hear.

The 2012 published under the name Giant Giant Sand rock opera Tucson reached the first album of the band in Germany the charts in the category " Independent Newcomer".
