Giedraitis family

The Giedroyc family, [ ɡ ʲ ɛdrɔɪ̯t ͡ɕ ] (plural Giedroyciowie, Lithuanian Giedraitis, to Giedraičiai plural ) are Lithuanian and Polish princely noble families, originally from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The name refers to the Lithuanian city Giedraičiai, who belonged to the family's possession.

Origin

The Giedraičiai probably go back to the time of the Lithuanian King Mindaugas († 1263 ), but are not related to him. Over the first members of the family are no evidence-based information, and the persons listed in the first documents to be brought into any precise kinship connection. Following traditions dating from the 16th century, they are descendants of the legendary Prince Giedrius, a younger son of the Grand Duke Gediminas († 1341 ).
