Giessen (district)

The district is located in the administrative region of Gießen Giessen in Hesse. Neighboring counties are the Marburg- Biedenkopf, the Lahn- Dill-Kreis, the Vogelsberg and Wetterau.

Geography

The county casting extends in its main places of Giessen basin to the northern Wetterau in the south. However, the largest surface area in proportion takes the opposite of a Front Vogelsberg in the eastern half, in the far east are part of the Vogelsberg. To the northwest of Gießen Basin also rich parts of the Gladenbacher mountain country in the form of Krofdorf King Berger- Forst with the widely visible Dünsberg into the district. Southwest rich parts of the district in the eastern Hintertaunus into it.

The Lahn enters in the north near Odenhausen the circle area, then flows south through the town of Giessen. Here it turns west, just a few kilometers west to leave the county again.

History

The current county area was divided into many pre-1800 dominions, of which the Hesse- Darmstadt and various Solmsische counties had the largest share. Smaller parts belonged to the Duchy of Nassau. With the mediatization 1806 solmsischen areas came to the newly formed Grand Duchy of Hesse, the areas of Nassau in 1815 by the Congress of Vienna to the Prussian district of Wetzlar. 1821 was the District Administrator District casting within the province of Upper Hesse. Since 1832, the name of this district district "circle casting ", whose territory was changed several times in the course of history. 1866 were the areas west of the Lahn to the Austro-Prussian War almost entirely to Prussia.

1939 separated the city pouring out from the circle and circle was free. On January 1, 1977, the district-free city of Giessen was combined with the city of Wetzlar and 14 surrounding municipalities to the city of Lahn, which received the status of an independent city. At the same time, the district casting was combined with the Dillkreis ( based in Dillenburg ) and the district of Wetzlar to the new Lahn -Dill-Kreis. Administrative seat of the new county was an administrative district in newly formed Lahn. Because of the strong protests from the population the territorial reform was partially reversed. With effect from 1 August 1979, the city of Lahn was dissolved again and the district of Gießen formed again. Casting was a special city within the county casting. The Lahn- Dill-Kreis was continued reduced, and the city also formed again Wetzlar its county seat. Since then, the county has a total casting 18 cities and towns.

2009 moved the District Office of the Giessen downtown ( Ostanlage 33-45 ) to the outskirts. Leased buildings of the former forest barracks and later Rivers Barracks of the U.S. Army in the so-called auto mile on the road Lich now serve the accommodation of the district administration.

In the direct election on 7 June 2009 Siegfried Fricke joined (CDU ) former full-time District Councillor as chief administrative officer candidate against Anita Schneider ( SPD ), which was the choice in the first ballot to decide for themselves: from 80 232 valid votes accounted for 44 002 ( 54.8 %) to Schneider and 36 230 ( 45.2 %) to Fricke. The turnout was nearly 42 percent. On 21 January 2010 Anita Schneider took office.

Coat of arms

The bar represents the typical triangle in a circle pouring half-timbered houses. It also symbolizes the interplay of county and emerging communities on the foundation of local self-government.
