In 1130 or 1135 the St. Gilbert of Sempringham founded a spiritual brotherhood in Lincolnshire. As Pope Eugene III. they are not allowed to connect to the Cistercians, they formed in 1148 its own connection. The nuns lived according to the Rule of St. Benedict, the men Augustinian Canons ( Augustine of Hippo ).

At the Reformation the Gilbertine in England had 21 branches. In 1519, the order was canceled.
