Giovanni Battista Passeri (* around 1610 in Rome, † April 22, 1679 ) was an Italian painter and writer on art of the Baroque in Rome.

Life

Passeri was a student at the Jesuit Collegio Romano, where he probably acquired even basic artistic skills. In 1634 he restored together with the Domenichino Giovanni Angelo Canini students frescoes in the chapel of the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati. Maybe Passeri was himself a pupil of Domenichino. 1661 he painted together with the Flemish Frans de Neve ( 1606 to 1688) and his assistant Francesco Pintinello frescoes in the Palazzo Doria Pamphili -. 1638 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and 1641 the Congregation of the Virtuosi al Pantheon, whose chamberlain he became in 1663. Passeri was ordained in 1676 in the Santa Maria in Via Lata to priests. Besides his work as a fresco painter from him portraits, genre paintings and still lifes have received. His pupil was the nephew Giuseppe Passeri.

More important than his artistic work was Giovanni Battista Passeris handwritten collection of artist biographies, the researchers an insight into the lives of Roman artists of the period from 1641 to 1673 today. Was published the work until 1772.
