Gisela Karau

Gisela Karau (nee Wilczynski; born March 28, 1932 in Berlin, † April 9, 2010 ibid ) was a German writer, who (GDR) became acquainted with topics from recent history, especially in the German Democratic Republic by a series of children's books.

Life

Gisela Karau was born in Berlin in 1932 and completed after graduating from high school in 1950, a five-year apprenticeship as an editor at the Berlin newspaper BZ in the evening, for which she was also working as a freelance reporter and columnist until 1990. In the 1960s, she began to write children's books. Her first work, which achieved a greater level of awareness and was reissued by different publishers even after 1990, the book was good, the star of Janusz K. (1972 ) on the fate of Polish children in the concentration camp Buchenwald. More popular in the GDR children's books by her were, for example, may I say to you, Wilhelm? (1979 ) on the life of Wilhelm Pieck and Loni (1982 ) about a girl in Berlin in the years after the Second World War. In addition, she wrote screenplays for a number of children DEFA films, so on the basis of her book The Good Star of Janusz K. the screenplay for the film My Blue Bird flies.

Were among her published in the GDR books for adults, for example, the novels Love Berlin (1984) and family row (1988). In 1986 she was awarded the Goethe Prize of the city of Berlin. After German reunification she published several novels which deal with the fates of people in the GDR, in the turn time and in East Germany in the period after 1990. In addition, she wrote, among others, Bolle, the friendly dog (1994 ), Kisses on Ice (1997) and This is the best family before (2003) more children's books.

Gisela Karau was married to the writer Günter crucian and mother of two children. After her first husband died in 1986, she married in 1988, 18 years his junior, Hans -Jürgen Dörry. She died in 2010 in a Berlin hospital.
