Giuli Alasania

Giuli Alasania (Georgian გიული ალასანია; born November 11, 1946 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian historian. The professor teaches Oriental History at the State University of Tbilisi. She is the mother of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Life

She was born as the daughter of the physician Mzia Tsereteli, descended from the royal family of Bagratides in Georgia. Her brother is Temur Alasania, owner of the mining company Madneuli JSC.

She heads the department for source studies of the Institute of History and Ethnography at the Georgian Academy of Sciences and has written over 90 publications, including six books on various problems of the history of Georgia and the Georgian- Turkish relations.

At the university she leads seminars on the history of Georgia, the Middle East and Turkey, on the editorial board of the Swedish center is issued for Social and Political Studies journal Central Asia and the Caucasus and the laid in Istanbul magazine dialogue Avrazia.

Since March 2005 Alasania Chairman of the Board of the Georgian University of Social Sciences, which aims to develop young talent for an organized according to Western standards, administration, economy and media.

She is also Research Director of the Georgian office of the Transnational Crime and Corruption Center at the American University in Georgia ( TraCCC - Go), which deals with the academic study of organized crime and corruption in Georgia. Under their guidance, analysis and strategy papers on the energy and transport sector, for smuggling, to colleges and trafficking in human beings are created. Alasania also decides on the award of scholarships.

She was Vice-Rector of the International Black Sea University in Tbilisi, which conveys the Georgian- Turkish students exchanges. In 1996, she conducted research in the context of a study program in the United States.

Alasania is chairman of the organization Georgian Diaspora - a bridge to the world.

Personal

She is married to the physician Nikoloz Saakashvili and has three sons, Giorgi, Nikoloz and Mikheil. The latter is since 2004 President of Georgia.
