Giuseppe Bonno

Giuseppe Bonno ( born January 29 in 1711 in Vienna, † April 15, 1788 ibid.) - in the Church of St. Stephen baptized in the name Josephus Johannes Baptista Bonno - was an Austrian composer.

Life

His father, Lucretuis Bonno, was a native of Italy, and was a runner in the imperial service. The son received his early training as a choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral by the local organist and conductor Johann Georg Reinhardt ( 1676-1742 ). Subsequently, he continued his studies with Francesco Durante and Leonardo Leo in Naples. He returned after ten years back to Vienna and was in the time from 1750 to 1760 Kapellmeister at the court of the Prince of Saxe- Hildburghausen. After the death of Florian Gassmann he was from 1774 until his retirement in 1788 Kapellmeister of the Vienna court orchestra. He was succeeded by Antonio Salieri.

In contrast to its current level of awareness Bonno was during his lifetime a major figure of the Viennese musical life, and his works were often performed. The majority of his compositions, including four oratorios and around 30 trade fairs, he created for church use. He has also written to the 20 stage works, including some in direct cooperation with the Vienna-based librettist Pietro Metastasio, such as L' eroe cinese and L' isola disabitata (both 1752), and L' atenaide ossia Gli gene affetti rosi ( 1762).

Stylistically, his works between those of the Venetian late Baroque by Antonio Caldara and Johann Joseph Fux and the classical works of Christoph Willibald Gluck and Haydn are classified, but also influenced by his long stay in Naples.
