The Monotonous gladiolus ( Gladiolus tristis ) is a plant of the genus Gladiolus ( Gladiolus ) in the family of Iris Family ( Iridaceae ). She is one of the parent species of garden gladiolus ( Gladiolus x hortulanus ).

Features

The Monotonous gladiolus is a perennial herbaceous plant, the plant height of 40 to 70, rarely up to 150 centimeters reached. As outlasting this Geophyt forms tubers with about 1 to 2 cm in diameter. The stalk is unbranched. The alternate and distichous distributed on the stem leaves are simple, long, sword- shaped, parallel-veined, in cross section, four wings, rotated 30 to 95 inches long and about 1.5 to 5 centimeters wide. The leaf margin is smooth.

It is a terminal, unbranched, predominantly einseitswendiger, ähriger inflorescence formed, the bracts and usually two to four (rarely up to eight ) contains flowers. The night after clove -scented, sessile, hermaphrodite, zygomorphic flower is threefold. The flower tube is about 45 to 50 mm long. There are two times three equal -faceted and colored bracts present, they are white to cream-colored, purple-brown outside crowded, the median nerve is greenish yellow to violet. It is only the inner circle with three free, fertile stamens present, because they are facing the outer bloom cladding and not protrude from the flower tube, with which they are fused at the base. The filaments have a length of about 20 mm, and the dust bag are about 12 mm long. Three carpels are fused into one inferior ovary. The style ends in three scars. The flowering period typically range from May to June.

The capsule dreifächerige fruit has a length of 34 up to 36 mm and contains many seeds. The wide winged seeds have a length of 5 mm and a width of 4 mm.

Occurrence

The Monotonous gladiolus comes in South Africa in the Western Cape Province before on sandy hills and fields.

Use

The Monotonous gladiolus is rarely used as an ornamental plant. It is not hardy in Central Europe.
