Glogovac

Gllogoc ( Albanian: Gllogoci, Serbian Cyrillic Глоговац / Glogovac ) is a city in the center of Kosovo and in the region Drenica, which divides the West from the East Kosovo. It is the official seat of the municipality of the same name.

Name

The city has three different names in Albanian: Gllogoc, Gllogovc or Drena. Especially the latter name has been largely established in the local vernacular.

Geography

The community Gllogoc includes about 290 square kilometers and is located in the central part of the country, between the Čičavica mountains to the east and the Drenica hills to the north and west, about 30 kilometers west of the capital Pristina. The main road from Pristina to Peja / Peć runs through the community. From this road, starting branches off at an intersection in the village Komoran a smaller road to the north of the main road that runs through the city Gllogoc itself and continues on to Skënderaj / Srbica.

By Gllogoc the Bach Lumi i Gllobarit, which coincides with the lume i bird in the vicinity of the Lumëbardhi and empties into the river Drenica flows.

Population

The municipality comprises the city itself and about 36 surrounding villages. The population in 2011 was about 59,000. After the Kosovo war, the community is in fact inhabited mono-ethnic Albanians.

Economic and health

The economy is dominated by agriculture, mainly wheat and maize. In 2009, was a part of the agricultural land, which had been lost as a result of the Kosovo war, not yet cultivated again. In addition to a larger number of small family businesses in crafts and trades in the U.S. owned, ferronickel processing gravel mining operation is Feronikel with about 1000 employees, by far the largest employer in the town. Lack of compliance with health and safety and environmental regulations lead time and again to serious accidents and severe environmental pollution of the environment.

A health center, seven smaller clinics and some doctor's offices serve the health care of the population in Gllogoc. According to the OSCE could be felt in 2009, lack of sufficient quantities of medicine, special equipment and trained personnel.

Religion and Culture

Islam is the most widespread religion in the community; there is a mosque in the city and seven more in the villages. Islam is Sunni dominated. In addition, there is a small Roman Catholic minority, but that does not have churches. The Serbian Orthodox Church also has no church building in the community, because it was not a traditional settlement area of ​​the Serbs.

Before the violent conflicts of the 1990s, the community had seven public libraries with 73,000 books. Of these, around 12,000 books were owned by the city library, while the offices in Tërstenik, cormorant, Arllat, Sankoc, Baicë gradice and kept the other 61,000 books. In the Kosovo war, the libraries were in Gllogoc and the branch at Baicë but completely destroyed. Today, the city has a new library with about 6500 books.
