Gorgona, Italy

Gorgona (Italian: Isola di Gorgona ) is an Italian island in the Mediterranean, the northernmost and smallest island of the Tuscan archipelago in the Tuscany region. It is situated in the Ligurian Sea, 34 km off the port city of Livorno. It belongs administratively to the municipality 2 ( circoscrizione 2: Venezia Nuova, Centro, San Marco, Pontine, magenta, Origine, Isola di Gorgona ), one of the five boroughs of Livorno.

The island is 2.23 km ². On it is since 1869 an agricultural penitentiary, which occupies most of the area. The island is mountainous covered (up to 225 m) and with pine trees and Mediterranean scrub. According to the 2001 census, 124 permanent residents were detected, of which 115 are in the main town of Gorgona Scalo. 2008, the population was ( with prison staff and inmates ) estimated at 300. The viticulture on the island of Gorgona is an important economic factor since 2013.

You can Gorgona only on Tuesdays during the summer months in small groups by prior appointment visit.

Nature

On Gorgona are the northernmost nesting sites of which grows only in the Mediterranean Audouin ( Ichtyaetus audouinii ).
