Giannutri

Giannutri is an island that belongs to Italy. It is the southernmost and easternmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago and a nature reserve. Your ancient name was Dianium.

Geography

The island has the shape of a crescent, extending from the north ( Punta Secca ) to south ( Punta del Capel Rosso ) about three kilometers and is up to 500 meters wide. The surface area is 2.60 km ². Giannutri belongs administratively to the municipality of Giglio Island, Grosseto Province, and has 13 inhabitants ( 2001 census). The state in 2008 still 10 residents are given. It reaches its highest point in the Poggio Rosso Capel with 88 m nn. Other heights are Poggio del cannone (68 m), Monte Mario (79 m) and Monte Adami (43 m).

The coast is rugged and rocky, and broken only by two beaches, namely the bay " Cala dello Spalmatoio " ( in the northeast ) and " Cala Maestra " ( in the northwest).

Attractions

  • Remarkable are the numerous caves that are located along the coast. The best known is the cave " Cala dei Grottoni " in the southernmost island region.
  • The Villa Romana ( Roman Villa ) was built in the 2nd century by the Domitius Ahenobarbus family and still exists today as a ruin.
  • Faro di Capel Rosso, Lighthouse, built in 1861.
  • Porto Romano, Roman port.

Climate

The climate is mild in winter, which testify to the numerous tropical plants ( Euphorbia, palm trees and wild orchids ).
