Gornji Vakuf-Uskoplje

Gornji Vakuf - Uskoplje is a town and municipality in the canton of Central Bosnia in the center of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The municipality has an area of 402 km ² and is made up of 14 local communities.

History

The village and the region are known for the extraction and processing of iron. Even in ancient times, there were several iron mines. Since the 16th century was traded with iron products. Among other things, the traditional Turkish coffee mills were established in the region.

Population

The 1991 census showed the following composition:

  • Bosnian Muslims - 14,063 ( 55.8 %)
  • Croats - 10,706 ( 42.6 %)
  • Serbs - 150 (0.6%)
  • Other - 262 ( 1%)

War 1992-1995

During the war in Bosnia, Gornji Vakuf was one of the places that Armija BiH were most affected by the clashes between the army of the Bosnian Croat ( HVO) and the predominantly Bosniak. The city was badly damaged and in fact split into two ethnically homogeneous communities: Gornji Vakuf ( Bosniak ) and Uskoplje (in Croatian ). In 2001, Gornji Vakuf and Uskoplje were combined to form a community with the new name of Gornji Vakuf - Uskoplje
