Gortzius Geldorp

Gortzius Geldorp, also: Gualdrop Gortzius (* 1553 in Leuven, † 1616 in Cologne ) was a portraitist and history painter of Flemish origin.

Life and work

The Leuven in Brabant grown Geldorp entered 1570/71 in Antwerp with Franz Francken the Elder in the painters guild. He then entered the workshop of Frans Pourbus the Elder, an eminent portrait painter of his time working. Francken and Pourbus belonged to the school of Frans Floris, who founded the Dutch Renaissance.

Gortzius gained importance and was appointed at the Duke of Terra Nuova, Carlo d' Aragona, whom he accompanied on his regular business trips, so among other things in 1579 to negotiate peace with the Netherlands to Cologne. The accompaniment of a painter at that time was tradition and they held, as now, the reporter, the impressions, people and sights firmly on their drawings. Up to d' Aragonas death around 1618 Gortzius remained his faithful companion.

As early as 1610 took over Gortzius Geldorp the place of Bartholomäus Bruyn the Younger in the city of Cologne advice. Some of his works were of Crispiaen / Crispin de Pas (1564-1637) engraved on copper, another of Peter Issel castle. To 1601 reproduced de Pas Geldorps Portrait of the Elector Lothar von Trier.

Gortzius son Georg Geldorp was a well-known portrait painter and was active in mid-17th century England.

Style

Geldorpe had a strong shiny coloration. Brown dominated in its color palette. His late works featuring smooth transitions and a bluish tone of the cuffs and collar.

Geldorps historical paintings have Dutch-style portrait of character. From 1595 he began to sign his paintings. His signature consists of an intertwining of his initials GG. For fecit is a f works of Geldorp Gortzius found in the Rheinische Landesmuseum in Bonn ( Portraits Eberhard III Jabach and his wife ), Cologne City Museum, the Alte Pinakothek in Munich and in Vienna's imperial gallery.

By 1920, there were about 70 of his portraits, mostly on wood, about 30 in Cologne. His oeuvre includes nine family portraits, the last dating from 1610. His work has been partly confused with those of Hans von Aachen.
