Gottfried Christoph Härtel

Gottfried Christoph Härtel ( born January 27, 1763 in Schneeberg, † July 25, 1827 in Cotta ) was a German music publisher.

Life

Originally from the Erzgebirge Hartel was the youngest son of the mayor Dr. Christoph Schneeberger Härtel. He attended the Latin school in Annaberg and the University of Leipzig. In 1795 he was admitted as a partner in the music publishing founded in Leipzig by Bernhard Christoph Breitkopf. Due to financial difficulties of Breitkopf he became the sole owner of the still existing publishing house Breitkopf & Härtel already in the following year. Furthermore Härtel founded in 1798 as the first of its kind, the general musical newspaper.

Hartel was one of the most important publishers of Ludwig van Beethoven; both also joined an extensive correspondence.
