Gottfried Vopelius

Vopelius Gottfried ( born January 28, 1645 Herwig village, today part of Rosenbach ( Upper Lusatia ); † February 3, 1715 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran cantor and teacher in Leipzig.

Life and work

Vopelius was the son of the pastor Christoph Vopelius (1591-1681) and his wife Maria, born monk and related products. Theurich. Of his siblings, Christian pastor and Tobias instrument makers. From 1662 to 1666 he attended the gymnasium of Zittau and was prefect of the school choir. 1667, he enrolled at the University of Leipzig.

In 1671 he was collaborator at the St. Nicholas School. 1677 he was appointed as the successor of Elijah Nathusius cantor of St. Nicholas Church. Besides teaching, he was therefore responsible for the liturgical music of the students.

As a result of his office, he gave in 1682 the New Leipzig hymnal out, this is not a church hymn book in the modern sense, but a Kantional for the school choir. Other editions appeared in 1693 and 1707. The work to which Vopelius itself probably contributed most of the anonymous sentences therein, was a significant impact on the choral music of the late 17th and early 18th century in Central Germany. For more than 30 chorale of Johann Sebastian Bach, the versions of Vopelius ' Hymns are detectable as a model.
