Goyave

Goyave is a municipality with 8309 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. The inhabitants are called Goyavien (ne) s.

Geography

The village is located in the Basse -Terre and is integrated into the agglomeration to Pointe -à- Pitre. It is part of the National Park of Guadeloupe and is located 8 kilometers south-east of Petit -Bourg. The Petite Rivière Goyave flows through the community.

History

Near the municipality of many guava trees grew, so she was called Goyave (French for guava ). The word Goyave as a name for the plant was created when the Spaniards took over the word guava from the language of the Arawak.

The grandfather of the poet Francis Jammes was mayor of Goyave in the 19th century.

Culture and sights

The Water Garden La Pépinière de Blonzac dedicated Manman Dlo, a mythical sea - and river goddess of the Caribbean. The garden is a collection of many different Caribbean plant species used for growing plants and to walk around, it can be visited on weekends.

The waterfalls of the river Moreau are in the south of Goyave in the forest of the mountains and can only be reached via a footpath.

The islet Fortune is an island that lies ahead Goyave in the Caribbean Sea. There is a nudist beach.
