Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia

Helena Pavlovna Romanova, Grand Duchess of Russia (Russian: Елена Павловна, born 13 Dezemberjul / December 24 1784greg in Saint Petersburg, .. † September 24, 1803 in Ludwigslust ) was a member of the House of Romanov -Holstein -Gottorp. She was, by marriage, Hereditary Princess of Mecklenburg.

Life

Helena was the second daughter of Tsar Paul I of Russia (1754-1801) and his second wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna, Princess Sophie Dorothee of Württemberg (1759-1828), daughter of Duke Friedrich II Eugen and Princess Friederike Dorothea Sophia of Brandenburg- Schwedt. She had nine siblings, including the later Tsar Alexander I and Nicholas I.. Their grandmother Empress Catherine II took her granddaughter as a baby beautifully and so they gave her the name Helena, following the example of Homer's epic Helen of Troy. Her upbringing and school education was in the hands of several tutors and governesses. She was educated in philosophy, literature, music, dance and languages ​​( German, Italian, French and English).

On October 23, 1799 married the 14 -year-old Grand Duchess Helena in Gatchina Hereditary Prince Friedrich Ludwig of Mecklenburg ( 1778-1819 ), eldest son of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I and his wife Princess Louise of Saxe- Gotha. From the harmonious marriage two children were born:

Short ill after the birth of her daughter Princess Beatrice Helena difficult, probably of pneumonia, and died on 24 September 1803. She was initially buried in the Ludwigsluster Castle Church in the vault under the pulpit and the corpse after completion in the 1804-1806 built Helenen Paulownen Mausoleum in the castle park Ludwigslust transferred.
