Grand Duchy of Würzburg

The Grand Duchy of Würzburg was a sovereign state in Confederation of the Rhine, which existed from 1806 to 1814. At first he was called until September 1806 Electorate of Würzburg.

History

Formation

As a result of Luneville peace and the Bishopric of Würzburg was secularized and the Electorate of Bavaria awarded by the Empire in 1803, with the exception of about 826 km ², the other princes were assigned as compensation. Bavaria joined the Peace of Pressburg in exchange for Tirol the Principality of Würzburg in 1805 to the Habsburg Ferdinand, the former Grand Duke of Tuscany from which transferred to him in 1803 for compensation surrendered Electorate of Salzburg to the Empire of Austria, whereas now Würzburg was raised to the electorate. On September 30, 1806 Elector Ferdinand joined the Confederation of the Rhine, and now took the title of Grand Duke of Würzburg, since the members of the Confederation of the Rhine were in a contract, all the dignitaries in relation to the current membership of the "Empire Germanique " store (Article III of the Act of Confederation ).

End and resolution

With the dissolution of the Confederation of the Rhine in 1814 ended the existence of the Grand Duchy of Würzburg. By order of the Congress of Vienna, the Grand Duke received his Erbstaat, the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, back; the Grand Duchy of Würzburg but fell largely returned to Bavaria. Its territory became part of the Lower Main Circle (now Lower Franconia ).
