Grand Marais is a small town ( with a status of "City" ) and the administrative seat of Cook County in the extreme northeast of the U.S. State of Minnesota. In 2010, Grand Marais had 1351 inhabitants.

Geography

Grand Marais is located on the north shore of Lake Superior, the westernmost and highest of the Great Lakes. The place is close to the border with Canada and the lake across from Wisconsin and Michigan. Grand Marais is located at 47 ° 45'02 " north latitude, 90 ° 20'03 " west longitude and covers 7.51 km ².

Towns nearby Grand Marais are Lutsen (28,6 km southwest along the lakeshore ) and Hovland (29,7 km northeast along the lakeshore ).

The nearest large towns are in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada (128 km northeast) and Duluth (177 km southwest). Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota, is located 425 km south-west.

Traffic

The main street of Grand Marais is formed by the leading along the north shore of Lake Superior Minnesota State Route 61. The historic Gunflint Trail, today's County Road 12 leads from Grand Marais in northern direction. All other roads are subordinate partly unpaved roadways and within local connection paths.

In Grand Marais, there is a small port through which the city has connection to all cities on the Great Lakes.
