Great Moss Swamp

The Great Moss Swamp ( literally: Great Moss Swamp, Logan Burn Reservoir ) is contrary to its name today is no swamp, but a reservoir in the Otago region of the South Island of New Zealand.

It lies in the Maniototo Plain near the old gold mining route Dunstan Trail, 85 km north-west of Dunedin. Nearest places are the settlement Paerau about 15 km north and 20 km east of Middlemarch, but to which no direct road connection.

The lake lies on the surface of the Rock and Pillar Range. This mountain range is a horst and therefore has a flat surface. Once the lake today was a swamp, but this was flooded by a dam for irrigation and hydroelectric power generation. The lake is drained by the Logan Burn, which flows at Paerau in the Taieri River.
